Cutting Board Care Guide

Care & Use

Our cutting boards are finished with an initial coating of mineral oil, but we recommend conditioning them before first use because boards can dry out during transportation or quickly after their first wash.

  • We recommend purchasing our Cook Well Wood Care Kit to maintain your board, although mineral oil and 220-grit sandpaper will also work.

Wood is an incredible natural material that expands and contracts with moisture and humidity. Thoughtful care will protect wood products for years to come.

How do I clean my board?

Clear the surface with a towel or bench scraper. After heavier use, hand wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly. Recondition as necessary.

How do you know when to sand or recondition the board?

Ask yourself these two questions anytime you use or clean your cutting board:

1) Does my board feel rough?

Sand with the direction of the grain to smooth the surface. Use our care kit sanding pad or 220+ grit paper.

2) Does my board feel dry?

Use a lint-free cloth to apply Cook Well wood conditioner or mineral oil. Cover all surfaces, including edges and ends.

Wipe off excess or allow to absorb into the wood overnight.

You’ll need to use more conditioner or mineral oil at first to establish a “seasoning,” then upkeep as needed. Over time, treated wood can develop a near-watertight seal.

After conditioning, the wood should feel hydrated and have a slick finish that resists moisture. Enjoy prepping food on your refreshed board.

Words of Caution

  • Avoid fully soaking or submerging in water.
  • Do not run in a dishwasher or use in a microwave.
  • Placing hot pots or pans on wood can result in a lasting burn mark or impressions.
